The train was travelling from Rawalpindi to Quetta. Its engine and six bogies were completely destroyed in the accident that officials say was because the train was switched onto the wrong track.
There are fears that the death toll will rise. Forty-six injured passengers were taken to the Tehsil Headquarters Hospital Sadiqabad while 12 whose conditions were more serious were taken to Sheik Zayed Hospital in Rahim Yar Khan. An emergency has been declared at the sheikh Zayed Hospital.
Rescue 1122 used 12 ambulances to transport people to the hospitals.
Railway Minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed said, the train accident occurred due to human error
At least 16 people were killed and 67 others injured when a passenger train collided with a freight train near Sadiqabad.
Speaking to Geo News, Rasheed expressed deep grief and sorrow over the loss of lives in the accident and said the accident occurred due to negligence.
Rasheed further said all assistance will be provided to the families of the deceased and the injured. He added, Rs 1.5 million will be given as compensation to the families of those killed in the accident, While Rs 500,000 will be given to those critically injured. Rs 200,000 will be given to those with minor injuries.

In a social media post, PM Imran Khan said, "Suddened to learn of train accident in Sadiqabad. My condolences to the victims families and prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured. Have asked Railways Minister to take emergency steps to counter decades of neglect of railway infrastructure and ensure safety standards."
